What’s this “Kino” thing then?
Kino is an international community of filmmakers who push each other to make films cheaply and quickly.
KinoLouisville is the Louisville branch, and only the 3rd US cell, of this film friendly group.
Co-directors Langan Smith and Whitney Bishop traveled to Madison, WI for Wis-Kino’s Fall Kabaret in November of 2004. Amazed, wowed, inspired, and energized, they returned to Louisville determined to create KinoLouisville. Wis-Kino, the Wisconsin branch of Kino, serves as our model and mentor in all things Kino. Their guidance and generosity have made all this possible.
KinoLouisville was launched in June 2005, opening with a very successful “First Ever” Kabaret.
The group is gathering strength and the movement is gaining momentum, so check back often to watch as KinoLouisville evolves!
Screenings? Kabaret? What Does It All Mean?!
Well, a screening is just that, a screening of films made in advance of the showing itself. Generally speaking, a theme or ingredient is announced, filmmakers then have from the time the theme is published until the night of the screening to make their films.
A Kabaret is a Kino tradition that involves filmmaking on a different level! This event is held over a 48 hour period. A secret ingredient is revealed at the beginning of the event. Filmmakers are to include the secret ingredient and create the film during the Kabaret time frame. Then filmmakers reconvene to screen the different films and fun is had by all.
The Story So Far
To date, KinoLouisville has held 9 screening events which have produced a combined total of 94 different films, and we’re not stopping there. Our organizers are always hard at work planning exciting new filmmaking opportunities. Stop by here often to check our upcoming events page for details. KinoLouisville currently has plans for 2 Kabarets or screenings each year.
